Art Class #2

My first art class was all about materials and what we needed to buy and why we had to purchase certain items. So tonights class was the first class where we got to actually "paint". Our homework assignment from last week was to find a picture of apples that we wanted to paint. It could be whatever we wanted, but had to contain one red apple and one green apple. I googled tons of images and even too pictures on my own. I then posted them in my sketch book and sketched my favorites. So I had three favorites and then when I tried to sketch them I narrowed it down to just one. Here is the photo I am painting....

So I know this has a weird background, but no worries...I am not painting that part. Just the apples...I will decide on the background later. So for those of you that paint you know that oils are supposed to be layered. So I sketched my apples onto my canvas and began painting. This is my first layer of paint...

I know it is a little strange looking, but I love the blocks of color. For homework this week we have to mix tons of colors and then add a few more layers of paint. Next week we will begin blending and adding highlights. I am so excited!

I really like the blocks too. When it comes to painting, I like when it's not too realistic.
